Funeral Attire for Men: What Should You Wear?

There are few occasions where what you wear matters quite as much as a funeral. Not because it is a time to make an impression, but because dressing appropriately is one of the simplest ways to show respect.

For men, funeral dressing is usually about keeping things understated. A well-fitting suit, a crisp shirt and polished shoes will rarely steer you wrong. The aim is to look smart, composed and respectful without drawing attention away from the occasion itself.

At Paul Andrew, we believe the right suit should make dressing for important moments feel straightforward. A considered fit, classic colour and simple styling can give you confidence without ever feeling overdone.

What Should a Man Wear to a Funeral?

For most funerals, a dark, well-fitting suit is the safest and most appropriate choice.

Traditionally, black is the obvious option, but a dark navy or charcoal suit can also work particularly well, especially when the dress code hasn't specifically requested black.

Keep the rest of the outfit simple:

This isn't the occasion for bold patterns, bright colours or statement accessories. Think classic rather than fashionable.

A suit that fits properly will always look more appropriate than one that is simply expensive. Clean lines, a comfortable fit and the right proportions do most of the work.

Is a Black Suit Always Necessary?

Not necessarily.

A black suit remains the traditional choice for funerals, particularly for close family members or more formal services. However, a charcoal or dark navy suit is often perfectly suitable.

If you already own a versatile navy or charcoal suit, there is usually no need to buy an entirely new one specifically for a funeral.

The key is how you style it.

A dark navy suit with a white shirt, black shoes and a plain dark tie can look just as respectful as a black suit. The simpler the combination, the more appropriate it tends to feel.

What Shirt Should You Wear?

When it comes to funeral dressing, the white shirt is difficult to beat.

A plain white dress shirt creates a clean, understated look and works naturally with black, navy and charcoal suits. If you don't have a white shirt available, a very pale blue can sometimes work, although white remains the most traditional option.

Avoid anything overly patterned, brightly coloured or particularly casual.

This is one of those occasions where your shirt shouldn't be the thing people notice.

Choosing the Right Tie

A tie might seem like a small detail, but it can change the overall tone of an outfit.

For a funeral, choose something dark and understated. Black is the traditional choice, while dark navy, charcoal or a very subtle pattern can also work depending on the circumstances.

There's no need for an elaborate knot or particularly eye-catching silk. Keep it simple.

The same principle applies to pocket squares. If you choose to wear one, a plain white pocket square in a simple fold is more than enough. Equally, leaving it out entirely is perfectly appropriate.

What Shoes Should You Wear to a Funeral?

Black leather shoes are the most reliable choice.

A pair of clean, well-polished Oxford shoes would be ideal for a traditional funeral, while a simple Derby shoe can also work well.

The important thing is that your shoes are smart, clean and in good condition.

This is not the occasion for trainers, casual loafers or heavily worn footwear. Your shoes should complement the rest of your outfit rather than compete with it.

Should You Wear a Three-Piece Suit?

You can, but you don't have to.

A classic two-piece suit is usually the easiest choice for a funeral. A three-piece suit can be appropriate, particularly if the waistcoat is understated and the overall outfit remains conservative.

The important thing is not to make the outfit feel too formal for the sake of being formal.

If you're wearing a three-piece suit, consider keeping everything else particularly simple: a plain shirt, dark tie and classic black shoes.

What About Accessories?

Funeral dressing calls for restraint.

A good watch, simple cufflinks and a plain leather belt are all perfectly acceptable. What you want to avoid is anything that makes the outfit feel deliberately styled or attention-seeking.

Think about the small details, but don't overthink them.

Your accessories should feel like a natural part of what you're wearing rather than something you've added specifically to be noticed.

What Should You Wear to a Funeral in Different Seasons?

The basic principles stay the same throughout the year, but the fabric of your suit can change.

Autumn and Winter

For colder months, wool suits are an excellent choice. A good wool suit offers warmth while retaining the structure and formal appearance you want from funeral attire.

Charcoal, black and deep navy work particularly well during the darker months.

You can also add a smart overcoat when travelling to and from the service. Stick to similarly understated colours such as black, charcoal or navy.

Spring and Summer

During warmer weather, comfort becomes more important.

A lightweight wool suit can be a good option, while certain wool blends can offer additional breathability without losing the formal appearance of traditional suiting.

Linen can be excellent for summer occasions, but for a traditional funeral, a structured lightweight wool suit will generally feel more appropriate.

The goal is to remain comfortable without making the outfit look too relaxed.

What Should You Avoid Wearing to a Funeral?

When you're unsure, the simplest option is usually the best one.

Try to avoid:

  • Bright or highly saturated colours

  • Large or attention-grabbing patterns

  • Casual trainers

  • Distressed or heavily worn clothing

  • Novelty ties

  • Loud pocket squares

  • Excessive jewellery

  • Casual shirts or T-shirts

  • Clothing that is visibly ill-fitting

It's worth remembering that dressing appropriately doesn't mean dressing expensively.

A simple, well-fitting suit will always be preferable to an expensive outfit that doesn't fit properly.

Dressing for a Funeral Is About Respect

There are plenty of occasions where men's suiting gives you an opportunity to experiment. A funeral isn't really one of them.

Instead, it's about getting the fundamentals right: a well-fitting dark suit, a clean shirt, a conservative tie and polished shoes.

If you already have those pieces in your wardrobe, you're likely much better prepared than you think.

At Paul Andrew, the focus is on well-made suits with a considered, tailored fit and timeless styling. Whether you're looking for a classic suit for formal occasions or building a wardrobe that can work across weddings, business and other important events, the right fit can make all the difference.

For occasions where what you wear is ultimately about showing respect, sometimes the best-dressed man in the room is the one nobody notices for the right reasons.
